Accessing Budgety
Begin managing your budgets and expenses effortlessly by accessing Budgety directly from the Apps menu in Jira.
You can access Budgety directly from the spaces page. Simply select a space, navigate to the tabs menu, and click on "More". This will lead you to a page displaying the budgets associated with that space. From there, you can easily navigate to each budget using its respective link.
Upon your initial entry into Budgety, you will be directed straight to your first budget page, allowing you to begin inputting data immediately.
Creating a new budget
When you click the [Create budget] button, you'll go through a two-step process — with an optional third step if you link the budget to a Jira space or work item.
Step 1 - Choose your budget type
First, you'll select the type of budget that best fits your project:
Project Cost: for tracking engineering, design, and infrastructure expenses. Selected by default.
Marketing Campaign: for tracking advertising, content creation, and partnership costs.
Blank: a clean slate with no predefined structure, for any other use case.
Step 2 - Fill in the basics
Next, you'll enter a few pieces of information:
Budget name: give your budget a title. If you leave it empty, it will be saved as "Untitled budget".
Target budget: set the total amount you expect to spend. This field is required.
Linked to: optionally link the budget to a Jira space or work item.
Depending on the type you chose, some things will already be configured for you:
Project Cost and Marketing Campaign budgets will include a period covering the current full year and three default forecast categories to get you started quickly.
Blank budgets open directly on the Costs tab with no predefined period or forecasts.
If you're creating a budget from a Jira project page or a work item, the process is the same — the only difference is that the relevant space or work item will already be pre-filled in the "Linked to" field.
Step 3 - Analyze your team's activity (optional)
If you linked the budget to a Jira space or work item in Step 2, Budgety will offer you the option to automatically generate costs from your team's logged work. You can choose to analyze the activity or skip this step and go straight to your budget page.
Budgety retrieves worklogs from Jira by default. If your team tracks time with Timesheets by Tempo or Timetracker, Budgety can use their data instead — as long as those apps are connected.
For full details on how this step works, including worklog sources and how costs are created, see Analyze your team's activity during budget creation.
Editing a budget
On the budget creation page, you have to enter various details: Budget name, linked work items, target budget and costs.
Budget name
Assign a title to your new budget, such as "Systems 2025".
Linked work items
This feature enables you to link the budget directly to specific Jira spaces or individual Jira work items.
Target budget
Establish your expected budgetary constraints here.
Period of the budget
Define a fixed time period for your budget to ensure your costs and expenses are tracked within a clear, bounded timeframe.
Tracking your budget
On the top of the budget page, you can view the overall tracking status, including the amount already spent and the remaining budget. This overview gives you a clear picture of your project's financial health at a glance.
Duplicating a budget
If you need to create a budget based on an existing one, you can duplicate it instead of starting from scratch. The duplicate will include everything from the original: name, linked work items, target budget, period, costs, forecasts, rates, and permissions.
You can find the duplicate option in the budget's options menu.
